Has Tom Brady changed the way NFL scouts evaluate quarterbacks?

Has he made them look at skinny, slow guys and made them wonder what the kid has inside? Joe Montana and Tom Brady were both taken in late rounds, and how many first round quarterbacks haven’t made it in the NFL? Do scouts need to evaluate things like leadership ablity, decision making ablity, and overall class? Think Michael Vick…

It might be a good idea

  3. They do, but it is impossible to judge someones drive. Scouts can only look at school records as far as smarts and class. Other than that, you have to see the QB with the most raw talent.

I doubt it. Skills wise…Tom Brady is no better than Rex Grossman. Brady just happened to fall into the perfect system for his limited abilities.

Edit: U of M Rocks…..so your saying that Tom Brady won the SB and the Patriots did not? Last I checked…football is not a solo sport…but a team sport. Nice try with the ring excuse though.

  5. It won’t change a thing, there will always be first round busts and those picked in later rounds that will be hall of famers. That is the beauty of sports, no sure things.

    I agree with Pretentious Patriots
its too difficult to draft someone and just hope they’ll be great
you need the Perfectt system around you
look all that the Patriots have given Brady they surround him with talent

Tom Brady is a great quarterback…it’s not only about the system. Give Brady credit where credit is due. Enough of the "he’s not that good". This guy could go down as the best quarteback that ever played the game.

As for your question, I agree with you…the intangibles are waht makes a quarterback great, his willingness to work hard and offer great leadership. I mean, look at Romo. The guy was not even drafted. And Roetlisberger was not taken high either. I think, all these guys that are drafted really high e.g Eli Manning, Matt Leinart have tremendous pressure to be great and falter under pressure. Brady, Romo etc do not have this tremendous pressure when they began their career. They start out as quarterbacks brought in just to manage the game…and they improve on their skills every year and win, instead of carrying the team like 1st round QBs are expected to.

  8. Scouts have always looked at non physical abbilities, Brady didn’t "change" that.

See Johnny Unitas, he was 145 lbs when he joined the Colts but had the "it" factor that can not be taught.

    (EDIT)

Sure there are QB taken in the late rounds or undrafted that now are Hall of Famers. But most of the great ones (Bradshaw, Elway, Marino, Graham, Namath, Steve Young, Favre, Tarkenton, Aikman) were taken in the first 3 rounds.

Even Montana was a third rounder, which I wouldn’t call a late round because there were less teams and 12 rounds.

  9. I agree, look at QB’s in league now, starting for teams… Majority were drafted late or signed as free agents out of college. Romo, Warner, Brady, many more…. were late picks or not even drafted. Go back through the last ten years of the draft… see all 1st rd qb’s… busts included harrington, Carr, leaf, shuller etc…

I think teams should target difference makers in the first two rounds… defensive players, offensive lines… maybe running backs. The problem with drafting a QB early, is you don’t know how he’ll perform. Yes he may be able to make all the throws, be able to run. But can he read a def. can he figure out where the blitzer is coming from. Can he manage a game (clock etc…). At least with a RB you know he has 4.4 speed or a WR is 6-3 w/ 4.5 speed. Those you can measure a get a good guess if they’ll suceed.

  10. look at how many top pick QBS have failed in the NFL. Brady is very good it wasnt til this year he had ther eceivers he won 3 SB with just an average receiver corp, granted he has a great OL that gives him lots of time that makes any QB better, but nevertheless you still need the raw talent his accuracy and sense of where the receivers are on the field is amazing. TRue the pats and Brady compliment each other, but you couldnt just place any QB in there and have him be as good as Brady.

  11. No. The NFL scouts probably think that he was just lucky. The NFL scouts need to look at leadership skills. To the person that said that Tom Brady was no better than Rex Grossman, how many rings does Rex have and how many does Brady have.
